London Underground joins green campaign

June 11th 2010

The London Underground has signed up for a campaign to substantially reduce its carbon footprint.

It was recently reported that a number of music festivals taking place this summer have joined the 10:10 initiative, which aims to cut carbon emissions by ten per cent in 2010.

The London Underground has now also joined the cause, announcing that ten of its tube stations will participate in the campaign.

As from yesterday (June 10th), a number of measures – such as turning off escalators during off-peak hours and limiting light usage - have been implemented in order to improve green credentials.

Eugenie Harvey, campaign director for 10:10 in the UK, said her organisation was gratified to see such efforts being made.

"The London Underground is truly iconic and such a crucial part of life in London, ferrying millions of people around the city every day," she commented.

"We're so happy to have them on board - reducing carbon emissions is, literally, as everyday as catching the tube."

The stations which are taking part in the initiative are Bank, Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Earls Court, Holborn, Charing Cross, Green Park, Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner and Victoria.
