IT systems crucial to CRC

July 13th 2010

IT systems used by businesses are an important factor in the government's Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), an expert has claimed.

The CRC is an obligatory scheme which has been developed to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in large public and private sector organisations across the UK.

Sonny Masero, vice president of ecoSoftware for CA Technologies, said selecting the right IT systems will be an intrinsic part of implementing the green measures.

He explained that specific software can be put in place to ensure that carbon management practices are constantly updated as business requirements change in accordance with CRC.

"Effective data management is important for this legislation because company reports could be audited, therefore data quality and the supporting evidence is crucial to avoid fines and criticism for non-compliance," Mr Masero said.

According to a recent survey by the company, around 65 per cent of businesses believe the manager of the IT department should be actively involved in carbon reduction strategies.

Some 79 per cent of respondents said they would be using spreadsheets in order to monitor their CO2 emissions.
