Government backs energy efficient lighting research

June 29th 2010

The government has provided funding for several research projects focusing on energy-efficient domestic lighting technologies, it has emerged.

Some £1.2 million has been invested into six feasibility studies, which will then go on to be assessed by the Technology Strategy Board.

The research will be undertaken by Cambridge Consultants, Juice Technology, Marl International, PhotonStar LED, Tridonic Atco and Zeta Controls – all of which have received up to £40,000 for their forthcoming work.

A further £450,000 is to be awarded to the the most promising concepts, in order for the researchers to develop prototypes.

Mark Glover, head of the Small Business Research Initiative, said the studies could provide substantial cuts in energy bills and carbon emissions.

"Ultra energy-efficient lighting could transform Britain's homes and energy use," he commenetd.

"At the end of the demonstration period, we want to see high-quality, compact ultra-efficient lighting that everyone would be happy to use at home."

He said it was an ideal opportunity for the UK to become a world leader in a sector that would create new jobs and improve the nation's economy.
